One Thought Upon Turning Thirty-One

Traditions are cool and fun so I'm writing a list of thirty-one thoughts upon turning thirty-one... some other time.

For now, I need to know- do you go to work or take the day off on your birthday???

Some people apparently stay in their house on their birthday but I think getting to see people you know is kind of the best part.

You walk into the office and someone goes "happy birthday" and you go "thank you" and then someone nearby goes "it's your birthday?" and you go "yeah, it is :)" and then they go "happy birthday". And I just think that is so fun!!

Then you go home and you have plan for a relaxing evening but your friends are on the porch playing poker so you walk outside and they go "ahhhh" and you go "ahhhh" and then one of them turns to a person there who doesn't know you that well and goes "it's her birthday" and that person goes "happy birthday" and you get to go "hey thanks :)". What's not to love about that???

But I guess it is also nice to plan something really special for yourself and turn off your email notifications and get cozy under layers and layers of blankets on your bed, or take in a sea of trees on a brisk hike or treat yourself to good food at a new restaurant and a walk through your favorite store with no budget. Or maybe you and the person you're closest to both take the day and spend it talking and making food together, crowded around a bubbling pot of soup that you'll serve in the good china (does anyone still have good china??) with a dollop of full-fat yogurt.

Maybe you're very lucky. And you spend your birthday like you spend most of your days, because you like the life you have and don't need to change anything for it to feel special.
